Little Alchemy 2, reviewed
Start with air, earth, fire and water, and combine your way to hundreds of items.
Open Little Alchemy 2 on the official siteOur take
Little Alchemy 2 starts you with four elements: air, earth, fire and water. Drag one onto another and, if the pair makes sense, a new item appears. Water and fire make steam; earth and water make mud. Each discovery joins your library and can be combined in turn, so the list grows from four to hundreds.
The logic is playful rather than strict, which is what makes it fun. Some combinations are obvious, some are puns, and a few take a moment to make sense. An encyclopedia records everything you have found, and a hint system helps when you are stuck.
It is relaxed and self-paced. Progress saves in the browser, so you can drop in for ten minutes and pick up later. The free browser version is complete; the mobile apps add extra content.
A first sitting
Combine every pair of the four starting elements, including each with itself. Then try what you made with the elements again before moving further out.
Where to stop
Discoveries come in bursts. When you have gone a few minutes without a new one, that is a good sign to stop for the evening rather than reach for hints.
